Walden Dental knows that you have many prospects for a “dental home” for your family in Austin, Texas. However, our dentist, Dr. David Frank, stands out with treatments that you can’t find at other dentists’ offices in our area. For instance, we offer one-visit CEREC crowns as a fast and easy alternative to the typical or standard way that these dental restorations are done at other offices. While our approach is associated with a hassle-free, convenient experience, Dr. Frank never compromises on the quality of these crowns. You can get the best of both worlds – a great treatment experience and long-lasting, natural-looking results.
Yes, crowns are a common dental treatment that is used to strengthen and rebuild weakened or brittle teeth. Made from dental materials, the crown is designed to fit on top of the remaining tooth structure. Of course, we have to remove any areas of decay or damage. So, each crown strengthens what is left of the natural tooth. It may be recommended when your decayed or damaged tooth can’t be repaired adequately with more conservative restorations, such as dental fillings. Or, we even use them to replace old or worn fillings. They may be the only way to “save” teeth that are deeply infected, because crowns are generally recommended following root canal therapy. With this treatment, we restore the natural tooth. Further damage is avoided that might lead to the loss of the affected tooth.
At other dentists’ offices that do not have same-day crown capabilities, the process takes at least two visits. The first visit involves preparing your natural tooth. Damaged areas of the tooth are removed. Information about the tooth is also collected. This information is sent to an outside lab. The lab uses these details to make your dental crown. A temporary crown is also placed to protect the tooth while your permanent one is being made in the lab. Once the permanent crown is ready, you return to the dentist. During this second appointment, the temporary is removed. The permanent crown is applied. If everything looks and feels fine, the crown is cemented or secured firmly to the tooth. If not, the process of making the crown starts all over again.
We use computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques. Specifically, Dr. Frank has invested in CEREC software and equipment to design and make your crown on-site. We have eliminated the “middle man” (the outside lab). Our team starts by cleaning and preparing the tooth to “accept” the crown. Then, we use CEREC software to transform digital scans of the tooth into a 3-dimensional model. Using this model, Dr. Frank designs your crown perfectly. This information is not sent to an outside lab. Instead, it is transferred to in-house equipment that then mills your crown from a solid, quality block of ceramic. You can even watch your crown being made! In the rare event we need to remake your crown, we can do so during the same appointment – no wait or additional trip necessary.
The benefits go beyond the obvious convenience and efficiency afforded by our high-tech approach to the crowns process. They include:
